Supreme Pilates
Pilates is a physical fitness regimen developed in Germany a
century ago by a man named Joseph Pilates. Pilates is one of
the most widespread fitness routines practiced today, second
only to yoga.
Because of the amount of stretching movements involved in the
floor routines, it is often confused with yoga. Indeed, pilates
and yoga have much in common, with both focusing on
strengthening the body's core supportive muscles and developing
an awareness of one's breathing, creating an alignment of mind
and body.
However, there is more than one type of
pilates practice. In the last decade, Mari Winsor has brought
pilates mainstream attention and devotion. It's true,
Mari Winsor pilates has made it easy for
everyone to practice pilates at home with the popular line
of Winsor Pilates dvds.
The line features DVDs for complete routines, targeting
specific areas, and the Winsor Pilates Sculpting circle, a
piece of equipment common only to this line. Supreme Pilates, developed by Ellen
Croft, combines common floor routines with the more
traditional, and complex, pilates training
machines.
Supreme Pilates utilizes a small piece
of equipment that is much more compact than the standard
cumbersome machine. Supreme Pilates is touted as being more
effective because practitioners are put through the body
sculpting floor exercises, as well as the muscle and
strength building machine workout.
Many gyms feature the ubiquitous pilates equipment, an item
known as the reformer. The reformer is resistance equipment
that looks like a combination of a bed and a table, a sliding
bench, with ropes and pulleys attached for training. The
reformer was designed by Joseph Pilates as a way to
rehabilitate prisoners during World War I. Pilates is generally
considered safe for most people, as the length and intensity of
workouts can be adjusted.
There are even routines tailored to children, the elderly, and
pregnant women, although everyone should check with their
doctor before beginning a new routine. Pilates has also gained
favor with those in the health field as part of physical
therapy routines. There are many options available to those
wanting to begin a pilates journey. You would be hard pressed
to find a gym these days that didn't advertise daily pilates
classes, with many also offering personalized
training.
If the gym isn't your style, there are hundreds, if not
thousands, of DVDs and programs you can do in the comfort of
your own home. The important thing is to find a routine that
works for you.
